Traders Point Christian Church, we are grateful for your extraordinary generosity in partnering with Compassion to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Your gift to plant four new churches in Peru has deeply impacted the communities surrounding these churches.
To reach the most vulnerable children, Compassion’s church partners are based in areas of extreme poverty. The presence of a Christ-centered church and child development center can make a lasting impact in a community and surrounding areas.
Prior to the launch of these new churches, the “mother churches” were extending their outreach to neighboring communities. They had been sharing the gospel and ministering to children and families, but they lacked infrastructure.
In 2018, the construction was completed on the new churches you supported. Each church registered local children and began offering Compassion’s program at a fully-equipped child development center. A brief update on each church plant is provided below.
The Impact of Your Gifts
A total of 937 children and youth are currently participating in Compassion’s holistic program at the church plants you funded in Peru. These children are benefiting from opportunities that would otherwise be out of their reach. Program activities encourage healthy growth — spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally and economically — and children are invited to participate early in their lives when the program can benefit them most.
Tailored according to age, gender, health, culture and family situations, the program changes as children’s needs change. Together, pastors, tutors, church staff and volunteers invest in the development of each child. Through nurture and encouragement, children develop confidence and begin to discover their unique gifts, passions and abilities.
As children and youth participate in Compassion’s program, they are equipped to follow Christ and achieve a fulfilling life.
Ministry Progress at the New Churches
Iglesia de Dios de la Profecia (PE0613)
The church serves a small community in the Castilla region of Piura, Peru. The community doesn’t have access to municipal services such as piped water or sanitation. Because of your generosity, the completed facility has five classrooms, a kitchen, office space and bathrooms for boys and girls.
Currently, 205 children are participating in the church’s Compassion center. 196 children have been matched with a caring sponsor and nine children are waiting to be sponsored.
Iglesia Evangelica de los Peregrinos (PE0618)
The new church is based in a community in Ferreñafe, in northern Peru. Due to the context of extreme poverty, local children suffer from high rates of malnutrition. Children participating in the church’s Compassion center receive annual medical checkups and necessary treatment. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy and Compassion ensures they have the medical care they need.
Today, 186 children participate in Compassion’s program at the church’s child development center. 173 children have been matched with a caring sponsor and 13 children are waiting to be sponsored.
Iglesia Evangelica Bautista (PE0620)
This church is based in an area of deep poverty in the Trujillo area of Peru. Childhood malnutrition is prevalent in this community where parents struggle to feed their families.
Thankfully, 160 children are participating in the church’s Compassion’s center. 151 children have been matched with a caring sponsor and nine children are waiting to be sponsored. Compassion’s church partners are vigilant about monitoring children for signs of malnutrition and providing nutritional support when necessary.
Iglesia Rios de Milagros (PE0625)
The church is located in a village of 7,000 people near Huancayo, Peru. Since 2019, the church has participated in a range of Compassion interventions including income-generation training for caregivers; pastoral support during the COVID-19 pandemic; food distribution; COVID-19 prevention and recovery; anemia prevention and treatment; and building healthy families.
Currently, 80 adults and 40 children regularly attend church services. A total of 386 children participate in the church’s child development program. 358 children are sponsored, 28 children are still waiting to be matched with a sponsor.
