Since 2002, Compassion has been tirelessly working to provide a path out of poverty for children in Nicaragua. In 2023, more than 72,000 children are participating in Compassion’s holistic child development program at more than 250 centers across the country. Every one of these children receives the nutrition, access to health care and educational support they need to beat poverty and grow into fulfilled, self-sufficient adults.
Almost one-third of people in Nicaragua live in poverty. The average annual household income is $1,650, and 30% of people survive on less than $2 US per day. As always, it is the children who are worst affected.
Compassion is striving to create the conditions in which no Nicaraguan child has to work instead of getting a good education, in which no child suffers from malnutrition, and in which no child is drawn into gang culture because he has no other option. Our child development centers provide an essential base for these efforts. They are staffed by workers who are dedicated to improving children’s lives in Jesus’ name and to reaching out to those most in need.
