For nearly 50 years, Compassion has been working in the Dominican Republic to lift children out of poverty in Jesus’ name. In December 2022, more than 66,000 children are benefiting from Compassion’s support and care at 237 child development centers across the country. Every one of these children receives the nutrition, access to health care and educational support they need to beat poverty and grow into fulfilled, self-sufficient adults.
In the Dominican Republic, 55% of children under 2 are living in poverty, and more than 40% of the overall population struggles to survive. The problem is particularly acute outside the main urban centers, where services are poor and infrastructure has been neglected. A quarter of people in rural areas have no access to improved sanitation facilities and nearly 26% do not have access to a safe water source.
