The Church of the Nazarene, New Town is located in the Ayora canton, in the province of Guayas. The humid, coastal community is called Pueblo Nuevo and there are approximately 4,000 residents. The area lacks potable water and sanitation, so its economic growth has been hindered.
The unemployment rate in Pueblo Nuevo is 60% and the average household income is only $60 a month. Adults try to find work as day laborers, plantation workers and street vendors. Due to the high levels of poverty, children often suffer from malnutrition. The primary diet consists of bananas, chicken, eggs and fish.
There is a public school in the community with one teacher to serve all children and all grade levels. Only 58% of the community has completed primary school.
Aurelio Abreo and his wife Juana Ruiz (pictured above) will lead the daughter church. They served in the mother church for many years. The mother church will provide supervision and resources for this church plant. The daughter church has purchased land (pictured below) and it is secured and ready for construction.
